Understanding qEEG
What is a qEEG?
A Quantitative Electroencephalogram (qEEG) or brainmap is a sophisticated functional tool that measures electrical activity in the brain. By analyzing brainwave patterns, qEEG provides a detailed map of brain function, which is crucial for identifying neurological dysregulation. The qEEG measures different types of brainwave frequencies—such as delta, theta, alpha, and beta that correspond to various mental states and functions, from deep relaxation to high focus. These patterns are then compared to normative databases, highlighting areas of the brain that are either overactive, underactive, or imbalanced.
This map reveals specific regions where brain function may be dysregulated, allowing for precise targeting of neurofeedback interventions. In neurofeedback therapy, qEEG serves as a foundational assessment, guiding personalized treatment plans aimed at enhancing mental health and cognitive performance. By identifying areas that may benefit from targeted neurofeedback, qEEG plays a vital role in optimizing brain function and supporting overall well-being.
Understanding nEUROFEEDBACK
What is Neurofeedback?
Now that You’ve gotten a qEEG brain map, the next step is neurofeedback. Neurofeedback is a non-invasive training method that helps the brain self-regulate by providing real-time feedback on its activity. During a neurofeedback session, sensors placed on the scalp simply read the electrical signals coming from the brain—nothing is going into the brain. Imagine watching your favorite movie or TV show as part of the session. When your brain activity is balanced and moving toward the desired pattern, the movie plays smoothly with clear visuals and sound. However, if your brain shifts out of balance, the screen may dim or the sound may lower, prompting your brain to adjust. This immediate feedback helps your brain learn healthier patterns over time. Each session is customized based on the qEEG brain map, targeting specific areas to promote improved mental clarity, emotional regulation, and overall cognitive performance.”

Commonly Asked Questions
What is neurofeedback?
Neurofeedback is a non-invasive therapy that trains the brain to function more efficiently. It uses real-time monitoring of brain activity to help individuals learn how to self-regulate their brain function.
How does a qEEG brainmap work?
A qEEG brainmap involves placing sensors on the scalp to measure electrical activity. This data is used to create a comprehensive map of brain function, identifying areas that may benefit from neurofeedback training.
Who can benefit from neurofeedback?
Neurofeedback can be beneficial for both children and adults experiencing symptoms related to anxiety, ADHD, sleep disorders, and other neurological and emotional challenges.
Is neurofeedback safe?
Yes, neurofeedback is a safe and non-invasive procedure. It has been used for decades and is considered a natural way to improve brain function without medication.
How many sessions will I need?
We typically start with 30 sessions, as consistency is key for lasting results. Many people experience improvements within this initial period, though some may need additional sessions depending on their unique needs and progress
Will the effects of neurofeedback last?
Yes, for most people, the effects of neurofeedback are long-lasting. Neurofeedback essentially teaches the brain healthier patterns, which it tends to retain. However, some individuals benefit from occasional maintenance sessions.
What will I feel during a neurofeedback session?
Neurofeedback is painless, and most people don’t feel anything physically. You’ll be watching a screen or listening to audio that changes based on your brainwaves. Many clients find it relaxing.
How does neurofeedback differ from traditional therapy?
Unlike traditional talk therapy, neurofeedback directly targets brainwave patterns, promoting changes in brain function without verbal interaction. It’s often used alongside other therapeutic methods for a holistic approach.
Are there any side effects of neurofeedback?
Neurofeedback side effects are generally mild and temporary, including fatigue, mood changes, brain fog, increased awareness of emotions, and occasionally a brief feeling of euphoria or heightened energy as the brain adjusts to training.
Your First Visit Experience
What to Expect During Your First qEEG Brainmap Session
During your initial visit at our office, you’ll be warmly greeted by our friendly staff, who will guide you through each step of the qEEG brain map process. The session begins with a consultation with Dr. Robyn to discuss your symptoms, concerns, and goals—whether the brain map is for you or your child. If it’s for a child, we prefer not to discuss detailed findings or concerns in front of them to ensure a comfortable and supportive experience.
Our trained technicians will then place a specialized cap on the scalp to measure brain activity. To ensure accurate readings, a small amount of gel is applied to each sensor in the cap, allowing it to pick up the brain’s natural electrical signals clearly. This procedure is painless and non-invasive, typically taking around 30 minutes.
Once the brain map is complete, we’ll invite you back for a follow-up session to review the results together. In this appointment, Dr. Robyn will go over the brain map in detail, helping you understand areas that may be out of balance. Based on these insights, we’ll work with you to create a personalized neurofeedback plan designed to support your or your child’s brain health goals. Our priority is to make sure you feel comfortable, informed, and supported throughout the entire process.
